Majority of the site is formed by granodiorites. Gently sloping hills (5-25%) are of mostly western and north-eastern aspect. Growing conditions are determined by the cold damp montane type of climate. The site represents an outstanding example of the climax stage of forests of the beech-fir forest altitudinal vegetation zone in the natural setting of the Veporské vrchy / Veporské Hills. These forest stands feature all principal developmental stages (ingrowth, optimum, disintegration) and phases (regeneration and gradual die back) of typical primeval forest of European setting.

The site fosters exceptionally well-preserved communities of the climax forest hosting all major large carnivores found in Slovakia such as brown bear Ursus arctos, gray wolf Canis lupus and European lynx Lynx lynx. These communities sustain the natural dynamics and biodiversity of primeval forest ecosystems of the beech-fir forest altitudinal vegetation zone. For its unique natural features the site has been designated a national nature reserve. Its outstanding natural attributes and profound contribution to the European natural heritage have not gone unnoticed by the Council of Europe which awarded this primeval forest a European Diploma.

The site itself (strictest 5th degree of protection applied) is free of any form of human intervention. Because of this natural self-regulation processes have not been disrupted and still provide for a rather high degree of resistance and resilience of local forest ecosystems. Certain sections of the nature reserve's buffer zone (4th degree of protection applied) shall in the near future be improved by management measures aimed at the enhancement of the ecological balance of local forest stands and improvement of their tree species composition. Having excluded generally known threats to the existing state of the environment such as global climate change and pollution there are not foreseen any other anthropogenic influences of major importance to impact the area in the future.
