Geomorphologically the site belongs to the subunit Slanské vrchy. The site is situated in the transition volcanic zone of the Zlatá Baňa stratovolcano that consists of the andesites lava flows and stratovolcano in the peripheral zone thas is built of pyroclastic rocks with the lava flows relics. Large abandoned opal mines with some mining works and refuse piles preserved on the surface are part of the site. Beech forests cover the major part of the site (almost 98 %) and their margins run out into the agriculturally intensively used landscape. Occurrence of the alder swamp woods with the Sphagnum growth is also important. Meadows cover just very small parts of the site. From nationally important plant species, the occurrence of Lilium martagon and Sphagnum fimbriatum has been recorded in the site.

Old opal mines and mining facilities have been preserved in the site. From the national point of view, they are one of the most important hibernation places of bats in Slovakia. About 16 bat species hibernate in the old mines. There is the biggest hibernation place of Myotis emarginatus in Slovakia in these old mines. The most abundant colonies of the following species have been recorded here: Rhinolophus hipposideros (max. 850 individuals), Myotis myotis (max. 1000 individuals), Barbastella barbastellus (max. 750 individuals), Myotis emargiantus (max. 700 individuals). The site is a part of the Special Protection Area (SPA) Slanské vrchy and it is also a part of the Important Bird Area (IBA) Slanské vrchy. Occurrence of 17 bird species has been recorded on the site, e.g.: Bonasa bonasia, Dryocopus martius, Strix uralensis. More localities within the site have been proposed for the list of EUROBATS sites, e.g.: Libanka, Malá Šimonka. Part of the site is protected as the Protected Site (PS) Dubnícke bane (Dubnícke mines) that was established in 1964. PS Dubnícke bane has been listed as a CORINE BIOTOPES site.

Abandoned opal mines have become an important hibernation place for bats. Considering that mining of opals was finished, technical conditions of mining works become worse gradually and their status influences abundance of the bat populations. Quality of riparian tree stands on the banks of local brook as well as the water quality in the brook has been affected by cinnabar mining.
