The site is situated within the Žitava River alluvium. Žitava River was regulated in the 80th of the 20th century. Geological basement is represented with fluvial sediments and in a marginal zone of the site (Hronská pahorkatina upland) with loess deposits. Important parts of the site are especially the nature reserve PR Žitavský luh (74.69 ha) and periodically overflowed depressions Luh and Pasienky. From the 90th of the 20th century the site has been affected especially by missing sufficent extensive management, especially mowing. Important current phenomena within the site are especially the succession changes of wetland vegetation within the NR Žitavský luh.

Site is one of the three most important areas in Slovakia for nesting of Porzana porzana, one of the five most important areas for nesting of Anas querquedula and regularly nest here more than 1% of national population of Circus aeruginosus.

Intensive seral processes of wetland vegetation leading to a gradual silting of the majority of wetland areas (rapid succession of reedmace Typha latifolia) and gradual destruction of the open areas of water bodies represent the major threat to the existing status of the site. Insufficient area of the periodically flooded meadow-wetland areas being mechanically mowed is another feature of the local land management not being welcomed by the conservationists. Neither is the process of natural succession of the tree and shrub species that can result in certain areas of the site being completely overgrown and thus changed. Likewise, sporting angling and hunting can in some areas contribute to the vulnerability of the site.
