Ursus arctos

The site encompasses a rich mosaic of forest communities of high nature conservation value among which most common are the communities of 9130 Asperulo-Fagetum beech forests and 9110 Luzulo-Fagetum beech forests. Geological basement is formed by acid igneous rocks. The site supports populations of several species of nationally protected plants, such as Clematis alpina, Soldanella hungarica, Gentiana cruciata, etc.

The site features last remnants of semi-natural flower-rich beech and fir woods in the territory significantly impacted by human activities. The site belongs to the territory of the proposed Protected Landscape Area Volovské vrchy. Its habitats provide valuable nesting grounds for several species of European importance among which there are featured species Aegolius funereus, Glaucidium passerinum, Dryocopus martius, Dendrocopos leucotos and Picoides tridactylus. Avifauna species of national importance are represented by protected taxa Scolopax rusticola, Turdus torquatus, Parus montanus and Parus cristatus. Old disused mining works provide important wintering grounds for several species of bats.

The key threat factor is application of the non-sensitive methods of forest management. Current practices of game management might prove disturbing for large carnivores of European importance. For more details see, please, section 6.1.
