Two separated plots lying on the xerophilous slopes to the north-east from the village Medzianky represent the site. On the top of the upper plot, there are the ruins of a small castle with the remains of the castle water-well. The small castle played a guarding role on the boundary between Šariš and Zemplín regions. From the geomorphological point of view, the area of Medzianske skalky (Medzianske small rocks) belongs to the subunit Beskydské predhorie. The site is a part of the Paleogene of the klippen belt. It consists of carbonate sandstone grits and conglomerates. Macrofauna of foraminifers was often accumulated in conglomerates. The site and its surroundings have a character of a hilly land. Approximately 60 % of the site are covered with xerothermic grasslands and scrubland facies, remaining parts are covered with the forest stands. The site is situated in the middle of agriculturally intensively used landscape, where the arable land alternates with intensified grasslands and woods. Many nationally important plant species occur in the site; occurrence of 7 orchid species has been recorded here, e.g.: Orchis militaris, Orchis mascula, Cephalanthera damasonium.

The site represents an important locality with the occurrence of the xerothermic grasslands and scrubland stands on calcareous substrates. Part of the site has been protected as a Protected Site Medzianske skalky (Medzianske small rocks) since 1990. Protected Site Medzianske skalky has been listed as a CORINE BIOTOPES site.

Abandonment of traditional land use (grazing, hand mowing) has enabled succession processes towards forest communities. Unregulated visit rate is a potential threat for the site.
