Geological basement of the site consists of fluvial and loess deposits and an extensive depression with the peat deposits in the area of Pusté Úľany village. Currently the site is intensively farmed.

Site is one of the three most important areas in Slovakia for nesting of Circus aeruginosus and Circus pygargus. Regularly nest here more than 1% of national population of Ixobrychus minutus, Galerida cristata, Coturnix coturnix, Falco vespertinus, Falco cherrug and Milvus migrans.

Intensive agricultural production together with the excess use of fertilisers and other agrochemical substances represent the most significant threat to the area status. Issues seen as the problem causing include illegal hunting (mainly the shooting of the birds of prey and owls) and the operation of power lines lacking effective protection against bird electrocution. Populations of the birds of prey species are also being negatively impacted by the destruction of non-forest tree vegetation and to a lesser extent also by timber felling practices. Aquatic birds, on the other hand, greatly suffer from the drainage of wetland habitats, water pollution and widespread sporting angling.
