The site represents a group of the well-preserved transition mires and fens in the Zimník stream alluvium running alongside its edges. From the geological point of view, Oravská kotlina Basin belongs to the flysch belt formed by late Tertiary sediments of clay, sandstone and gravel. Basin physical diversity is very limited (smooth-modelled topography).

The site is situated within the territory of the Important Bird Area (IBA) Horná Orava and it is also a part of the Mokrade Oravskej kotliny / Wetlands of Orava Basin Ramsar Site. The site features the representative habitats of the transition mires (alliance Caricion lasiocarpae). Locally occurring cryptogams include the glacial relic element Paludella squarosa, very rare species otherwise featured on only few other sites in Slovakia.

Characteristic features of the local peat bogs and their communities are under threat of being lost as soon as traditional forms of land management (haymaking) are to disappear. Penetration of the synanthropic species of plants from the adjacent agricultural lands is also harmful and habitat disturbing.
