The site is noted for a very rich mosaic of various topographic phenomena underlain by its limestone basement. Phenomena featured include rock towers, canyons, rock balconies, cliffs, underground watercourses and springs. Prosiecka dolina Valley belongs to one of only two valleys of the Carpathians whose canyons, although originally being formed by running water, now feature only seasonal watercourses. Water fills the canyon only for a short period of time during spring thaw and in situations of substantial precipitation. For the rest of the year, the water flows underground. Research into the area topography has resulted in the identification of several shorter caves; longer cave system assumed to exist still awaits serious scientific exploration.

The site represents a rich mosaic of various habitats including relic pine woods, Asperulo-Fagetum beech forests (9130), scree forests and the biological communities of limestone crevices and scree. The site is noted for the presence of more than 20 different species of orchids as well as many elements of dealpine and prealpine flora. It also provides important nesting grounds for several species of endangered birds of prey. On top of that, it also harbours several large carnivores. Its northern sections feature well-preserved pasturelands and fens with high content of carbonates.

The key threat factors include timber harvesting in forests, high intensity livestock grazing and the abandonment of regular management practices. Absence of regular management in case of meadow and fen habitats inevitably leads to seral processes whose direct result are unwelcome changes of their communities.
