The site represents a unique and well-preserved complex of peat bog spruce woods on transition to in mosaic featured meadow communities of transition mires harbouring several nature conservation important species of fauna and flora. From the geological point of view, the site is built by the flysch of Magurie type formed by layers of various sandstones and claystones. From the topography point of view, the site mostly bears the characteristic features of plateau divided by action of water into the system of valleys and flat ridges. Local soil types include Histi-Mollic Gleysols and Haplic Histosols. Average peat depth of the site is 1.86 metres.

The site represents a unique example of peat bog sprucewoods (91D0* Bog woodland) with a mosaic of mutually overlapping plant communities of transition mires and active raised bogs. The site is exceptional because of the uniqueness, high degree of preservation and naturalness of its plant communities and the presence of several rare and scarce species of bog flora. Spálený grúnik sub-site represents the only Slovak refuge of montane species Somatochlora alpestris. Tisovnica sub-site is noted for the only occurrence of nationally protected tree species Pinus xrotundata in entire Slovakia. The site overlaps with the territory of the Horná Orava SPA.

Peat bogs of Oravské Beskydy Mts. (Spálený grúnik) belong to sites least impacted by various anthropic activities. Tisovnica sub-site has partially been disturbed by construction of drains. In order to restore the compromised water regime existing drains have been dammed to help retain water. Character of some forest stands around Novoťská hoľa Mt. suffered in a consequence of artificial regeneration encouraged in the past. The site frequently suffers from snow and wind damage.
