Popis územia

The site features a well-preserved stretch of foothill stream of torrent type in a widened V-shaped valley including adjacent alluvial wetlands and travertine terrace that provided for the development of riparian vegetation and valuable habitats fostering several rare and endangered species. The stream belongs to the core area of the Western Carpathian range for the species river otter Lutra lutra. The site is formed by limestones and dolomites of Triassic era. Alluvium situated in southern sections of the stream is penetrated by granite fluvial cone. Its northern sections on the other hand flow through thick deposits of travertine rock. Stream's channel is predominately built by gravel and sand originating from the granites of crystalline complex of Smrekovica a Nízke Tatry / Low Tatra Mts. Also present are travertines, limestones of various facies and rauwackies forming together with other alluvial deposits the stream floodplain.

Ciele ochrany

The site features wetland habitats, fens and springs noted for the unique presence of endangered and critically endangered species of flora including some glacial relics such as Cochlearia pyrenaica for which the site represents the only promising population of the species in entire Western Carpathians. The site represents an important ecological corridor and is highly appreciated as valuable natural landscape feature in otherwise intensively exploited countryside (agricultural production, recreation). The site possesses the protection status of natural monument and protected site.

Zraniteľnosť

Majority of valuable habitats and species supported by the site for their existence vitally depend on the availability of sufficient resources of both underground and surface water of proper quality. Quality of water and hydrological regime are both under potential threat of being worsened as a result of human activities carried out in the area (proximity of human settlements, thoroughfares, management of adjacent lands). Risk of pollution of local water resources is substantial.
